Basketball market prices describe more than which team looks stronger. The game period, points threshold, player participation terms and treatment of overtime determine the position you are evaluating. This guide connects NBA market wording to payout math without presenting current games or recommendations.
Translate a basketball contract into break-even probability
A hypothetical 40¢ contract paying $1 on a win has a gross return ratio of 2.50, equivalent to +150 American odds. Its break-even probability is 40% before costs. That does not mean the team has a proven 40% chance: liquidity, spread and participant beliefs all affect a quote.
If you estimate the outcome at 45%, the expected profit per contract is 0.45 × $1 − $0.40 = $0.05 before fees. The estimate is the uncertain input. Substituting the market price for an independent probability simply restates the quote; it does not establish positive expected value.
A spread win and a game win answer different questions
For an illustrative NBA favorite at −5.5, a five-point victory wins a game-winner position but loses the spread position. An underdog at +5.5 covers in that result while losing the game. Keep the signed handicap attached to the correct team when comparing venues.
A total of 224.5 concerns both teams’ combined points. A 116–110 final totals 226, above that threshold. Team totals, quarter totals and full-game totals are separate markets. A high-scoring first quarter does not settle a full-game contract, and identical numeric thresholds for different periods are not matching outcomes.
Check the period and player participation boundaries
NBA regulation has four twelve-minute periods; overtime periods last five minutes. Those extra minutes can change a game total, a spread result or a player statistic. A regulation-only total and an overtime-inclusive total need not settle alike, even when both mention the same game.
Player markets need additional checks: whether the player must start or participate, how an absence or early exit is treated, which official statistic is used and whether later corrections count. Kalshi notes that participation rules differ by sport and appear on the market page. Do not infer an NBA player rule from a football example or assume every prop is binary at settlement.
Keep research timing separate from the quoted price
Availability news and starting-lineup changes can affect a basketball probability estimate. Record when your inputs were checked and distinguish a confirmed report from a scenario. An injury narrative alone does not tell you whether a price has already incorporated the information.
Before comparing Kalshi, Polymarket or other venue prices, verify the same game, period and outcome terms. Then compare executable prices and fees for your intended size. Use expected value for an independent probability estimate and no-vig normalization for a two-sided price comparison; neither calculation verifies the underlying research.
Illustrative example: A total that changes in overtime
Illustrative example: regulation ends 110–110, a combined 220 points. Overtime ends 119–116, a combined 235. A contract asking whether the regulation score exceeds 224.5 resolves differently from one counting the full game including overtime.
Two opposing positions across those different scopes do not form a complete hedge. For price math alone, a $40 purchase of 100 contracts at 40¢ returns $100 if the specified outcome wins, leaving $60 profit before costs. Model the exact settlement question in the odds and EV calculators.
